Advice is always meant well.
What I learned from Coaching though, is that advice seldom helps. Our advice is based on our own assumptions, experience, principles and on what we would do if we were in a similar situation. Although we all mean well by giving advice, we need to keep in mind, that what works for us, does not necessarily work for someone else. A list of “Have you tried this…” or “Why don’t you do…” is often unfitting to the person and his/her situation.
Give advice if it is explicitly asked for; otherwise listen, ask questions, try to understand the situation out of his/her perspective and show understanding.
